Unpopular Opinion
I recently was asked what my opinion was on Beauty Blenders for applying makeup and I think my response was not what was expected. I think there are sanitary ways of using them and unsanitary ways of using them. Personally- I do not use beauty blenders. At all. I use single use sponges in my special effects kit but that is the only place you will see sponges in my kit.
Reason for that- I mostly think they are unsanitary and waste too much product.
Has anyone seen how much product is used on a sponge?! It’s unreal! And you have to figure, with that much wasted product- how often are you buying foundation? And how expensive is it becoming to use the sponge? And, from my professional view point- how much more is the client being charged for the cost of foundation and the frequency of replacing it? To be sanitary, each blender would have to be single use. Imagine the cost differential on that?
They are unsanitary because beauty blenders are reusable; but the cleaning method does not strike me as being the most sanitary way of cleaning them. With brushes, we can get that deep clean in between bristles. Its noticeable when the brush is not cleaned to perfection and you don’t have to be of a certain profession to see that dirty is dirty with makeup brushes. With regard to the spherical sponges- you can rinse them until the water runs as close to clear as it will get. But will they ever be completely clean? After a couple of uses, discoloration shows on the sponge. In my opinion, if the sponge was cleaned to perfection then there should be no staining of the sponge whatsoever. However, I don’t see that as being possible with the latex that is the sponge. And to think that a reusable sponge is being used on multiple faces without proper security that it is cleaned and sanitized wholly, I can not back that.
It is one thing to use the spherical sponge on oneself. In that respect- I understand it completely, that is sanitary. If no one else’s face will touch that sponge, then you can be assured that no skin ailments will be passed on from one person to another. In my profession, however, I can not say that this is a sanitary way of working on clients securely and thus, I have concern and reserve the right not to use them.
